Essential Communication Skills Needed for High-Quality Primary Care
摘要
This chapter provides a blueprint that will detail essential communication skills that primary care providers (PCPs) would benefit embracing to answer the call put forth by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (Implementing high-quality primary care: Rebuilding the foundation of health care. The National Academies Press, New York, 2021) to treat behavioral health (BH) conditions in primary care, as well as the recent changes to training guidelines by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Further, the chapter provides a philosophical framework which illuminates core principles aimed at helping PCPs organize their approach to care in a contextual and compassionate way. It is well known that trying to solely memorize and carry forth “rules” will be less effective, and potentially harmful, than to assimilate important, core principles. To ultimately achieve the mission of delivering high-quality primary care, we hope to provide core principles for approaching patient care as well as delineate “rules” around pragmatic, replicable skills.
