Breaking Boundaries. Unveiling Gender Dynamics in Media and Communication across Latin America. An Introduction
摘要
This chapter lays the foundation for a comprehensive analysis of how media both reflects and shapes societal norms around gender in the region. It highlights how Gender Dynamics in Latin American Media and Communications examines the dual role of Latin American media as both a perpetuator of traditional gender roles and a platform for progressive representation and activism. The text examines persistent stereotypes in mass media, such as telenovelas and journalism, while acknowledging the strides made by feminist movements and initiatives like Ni Una Menos to challenge these norms. This chapter also underscores the transformative potential of social media, despite its risks, as a tool for advocacy and visibility for marginalized voices. By contextualizing the discussion within the region’s cultural, political, and historical complexities, the chapter frames the book’s interdisciplinary analysis of the intersections between media, gender, and power. It emphasizes the need for continued research and action to foster gender equity in media representation and production.
