Since IDS ADC can be seen as a subtype of the more commonly used free-running DS ADC, in this chapter we will first give a general overview of the basics of plADC, quantization in time and amplitude, introduce oversampling and noise shaping as basic techniques used in all DS ADC, and then discuss the operating behavior of free-running DS ADC to provide the theoretical background for understanding the following chapters. The chapter will also cover typical performance measures of ADC in general and DS ADC in particular, as well as provide an overview of the vast topic of DS ADC synthesis and optimization.
