Ocean Literacy Beyond Borders. Engaging the Private and the Public Sectors on Ocean Literacy Initiatives to Accelerate the 2030 Agenda: “The Leaders We Need for the Ocean We Want”
摘要
This chapter explores a largely untapped opportunity for Ocean Literacy (OL) professionals: engaging public and private sector leaders—particularly decision-makers—to integrate Ocean knowledge into sustainability and ESG strategies. Recognizing the Ocean’s pivotal role in climate regulation, energy transition, biodiversity regeneration, food security, and economic stability is essential for advancing a sustainable, resilient, and safe future. While OL has traditionally focused on education and youth engagement, its scope must expand to influence corporate leadership, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, embedding Ocean sustainability into business operations and public governance. By integrating Ocean science and addressing Ocean-related risks and opportunities, OL can inform decision-making to drive and scale systemic change across sectors. Achieving this transformation requires the co-design of innovative initiatives between OL professionals and stakeholders from both sectors. Only through the development of tailored content can OL be effectively integrated into corporate strategies and public policies, aligning with the UN Ocean Decade challenges and the 2030 Agenda to foster a long-term, cross-sectoral commitment to Ocean stewardship. As a perspective piece, this chapter offers insights, critical reflections, and strategic recommendations to stimulate dialogue and inspire further research in this evolving field.
