When Wittgenstein started to write his Notebooks 1914–1916, he read, studied and carried with himself Tolstoy’s The Gospel in Brief “like a talisman”. In this chapter we are going to explore Tolstoy’s influence on Wittgenstein, in particular, on his Tractatus. Usually, this influence is explored in connection with Wittgenstein’s deliberations on ethics and the “mystical”. By contrast, the present chapter establishes that Tolstoy also influenced Wittgenstein’s logical philosophy and concludes by making it clear that the mystical was discussed in the Tractatus but has no place in it.

摘要
