After the development of fluphenazine decanoate, haloperidol decanoate came to market in 1987. This long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic has a more stable ester bond, slower hydrolysis, and longer duration of action than fluphenazine decanoate, which extends its dosing interval (Hemstrom et al., Drug Intell Clin Pharm 22:290–295, 1988). This chapter provides clinical pearls on how to appropriately prescribe and administer haloperidol decanoate.
