This chapter provides a short introduction to the weighted residual method, which allows to the derive all classical approximations methods in structural engineering. Based on the example of a tensile bar under static loading conditions, the procedure is applied to derive the finite element and the finite difference formulations for this fundamental structural member. The chapter concludes with an application example at which a tensile bar is calculated based on linear and quadratic finite elements as well as based on a finite difference approach.

摘要

This chapter provides a short introduction to the weighted residual method, which allows to the derive all classical approximations methods in structural engineering. Based on the example of a tensile bar under static loading conditions, the procedure is applied to derive the finite element and the finite difference formulations for this fundamental structural member. The chapter concludes with an application example at which a tensile bar is calculated based on linear and quadratic finite elements as well as based on a finite difference approach.
