Grotesque Anthropocene: Points of Departure
摘要
It doesn’t require much black humour to apply the category of the grotesque to present environmental circumstances, which are often referred to as “Anthropocene”.Anthropocene Seeing, on the one hand, how species are annihilated, wilderness is displaced by monocultures, mountains of garbage spread around cities, islands of plastic integrate into the oceans, and gigatons of carbon dioxide and other poisonous gases infect an increasingly fragile atmosphere, and, on the other, how global middle-upper classes intensify an ideal of a “good life” which exactly drives this multifarious environmental breakdown, we gain a combined image of destruction and gluttony, which one might easily call grotesque. In this introduction, we explore the potential of the environmental grotesque, as an aesthetic form, to break the spell of capitalist realism and to make room for the emergence of new potentialities and becomings—both theoretical and practical and across media boundaries.
