The historical development of surgical technologies in acute care and emergency surgery is inextricably linked with progress in surgery and medicine in general. In this chapter, we will highlight the main historical milestones in the development of the main new technologies used in emergency surgery. Such technologies are minimally invasive and robotic surgery, the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence, including in decision support systems, telemedicine, and personalized treatment in general. Advances in emergency surgery are also being achieved through new operations and modifications to surgical instruments and medical devices. Many developments and innovations have resulted from interdepartmental, interspecialty, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
