Food waste is a pressing global issue with profound environmental, economic, and social consequences. Beyond its tangible waste of resources such as water, land, and energy, food waste contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 8–10% of global annual emissions which amounts to about 2.7 Gt CO2e of emissions. This inefficiency amplifies the environmental consequences, as uneaten food accounts for a quarter of freshwater consumption in agriculture and places immense pressure on arable land and biodiversity. The Quran, which reveres food as a divine blessing, provides ethical and practical insights into addressing this challenge. This paper examines Quranic guidance on food waste by identifying its drivers and proposing solutions based on tafsir literature and textual analysis of various Quranic verses. The study further examines Quranic solutions, emphasizing the role of charity (Quran 6:141) and resource conservation (Quran 16:92). Behaviors encouraged through many of the Quranic verses, such as preparing food by one’s own hands (Quran 36:35) and mindful eating (Quran 80:24), foster gratitude and a deeper appreciation for sustenance, thereby mitigating waste. Although various prior researches have extensively studied the Islamic perspective on food waste, scriptural insights available on the issue remain underexplored. This study addresses this gap by comprehensively examining Quranic verses that underscore a profound concern for food preservation. The findings hold particular relevance for Muslim societies grappling with excessive food waste and, are also prone to the effects of climate change, emphasizing the growing importance of religious approaches in addressing this critical issue especially in Islamic societies.

摘要
