If the recent scenario of climate change impacts continues, then it will probably become the biggest disaster in human history created by our humans. To avoid this destruction, there is an urgent need for collective action to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG) that mainly contribute to climate-changing impacts. This review highlights the mitigation mechanisms to reduce GHG emissions to lessen the effects of climate change on the global community by providing sustainable and efficient methods to reduce GHG emissions generated in the waste sector. Apart from its other impacts on the environment, solid waste also contributes to GHG emissions. However, these contributions can be put down by implementing different sustainable initiatives provided under the banners of 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) method including recycling and conversion of waste to energy production, solid waste volume reduction, and organic fertilizer composition, avoiding landfills and effective disposal mechanisms and their use for energy production, agricultural waste management, recycling and alternate use to make fodder for animals, energy production, biomass production, and recycled paper making. Besides providing a significant study of these initiatives for GHG emissions reduction, this review urges for further transitions including public and private sector involvement by awareness campaigns, upgraded and advanced GHG emissions measuring and data collection systems for relevant and effective adaptations and further research activities to effectively address this issue for reducing GHG emissions.

摘要
