The Nature and Organisation of the Sex Market
摘要
In this chapter, an attempt is made to distinguish between different sectors and actors in the UK’s sex market and to explore the impact of online technologies on its development. It will begin with a theoretical discussion of why individuals engage in and consume sexual labour. Second, it explores the characteristics associated with street-based and off-street sex markets and the impact of online technologies in reconfiguring the geographies of commercial sex. Finally, it critically discusses the implications of these technologies in relation to various actors operating within the sex market. It concludes by arguing that the adoption and integration of online technologies have increased the autonomy of the majority of sex workers while, paradoxically, also increasing the opportunities for groups and individuals seeking to exploit others.
