What do we know when we know a creative person? In paraphrasing the question posed by McAdams (What do we know when we know a person? Journal of Personality, 63(3), 365–396. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-6494.1995.tb00500.x , 1995), in this chapter I review theoretical approaches to understanding the person and their personality and relevant research in creativity studies. Beyond openness to experience, we cannot talk about a unified description of the creative person. Rather, descriptions of creators should be sensitive to the domain and take into account socio-cultural situations that support or impede actualization of creative potential. Comprehensive description of creative individuals will include information about different personality functions (emotion and motivation, cognition, social action, self-regulation), as well as core personality attributes (traits and abilities stable through time and situation) and surface attributes (aspects of the self-concept or context-specific attributes). The chapter concludes with suggestions for future research.
