This chapter introduces the guiding question behind the book—How can we describe creative individuals? Traditionally, this question has been in the domain of personality psychology and it has included most prominent examination of traits that distinguish creative individuals, whether in a domain-general manner or specific to their area of work (e.g., artists vs. non-artists, more and less creative scientists). This book reviews central topics in the study of the creative person such as their traits, self-concept, cognition, and motivations and values, but also places the study of creative individuals in the context of major debates in creativity studies (levels of creativity, domain specificity vs. generality, nature of creativity as positive vs. dark, creativity relationship with mental illness vs. well-being) and engages with development of creative individuals. This chapter provides a brief overview of questions addressed in each topical chapter.
