Vegetable production is on the rise worldwide. In addition, consumers are demanding improvements in the nutritional and health benefits of these vegetables. At the same time, there is a growing trend toward sustainable agriculture that does not harm the environment and reduces pollution from agrochemicals. Compared to extensive crops, there is less information available on the use of Azospirillum inoculation in vegetable crops and even less under productive conditions. Here, we summarize the information on the effects of Azospirillum spp. application on lettuce and tomato as main model species and advances in situations tested in greenhouses and in the productive field under different conditions. Inoculation with Azospirillum alone or in combination with other microorganisms shows significant benefits during the seedling and productive stages. Improved plant growth and development, higher yieldsYield and improved leaf and fruit quality, and extended storage life are achieved. Crop performance can be enhanced even during periods of stress and moderate soilSoil salinity. Azospirillum has a high potential to be used as a low-cost and environmentally friendly tool to increase the productivity and quality of vegetable crops.

Vegetable production is on the rise worldwide. In addition, consumers are demanding improvements in the nutritional and health benefits of these vegetables. At the same time, there is a growing trend toward sustainable agriculture that does not harm the environment and reduces pollution from agrochemicals.
