The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in media has a dark side, at least for the time being. On the one hand, AI and machine learning (ML) could be established as powerful technologies that may have positive impacts on journalism, for example, by developing tools for automation, news production, and fact-checking. On the other hand, they have proven to be successful in developing techniques for misinformation distribution and news manipulation that spread hoaxes and divisive content to large groups of readers at high speed. The aim of dark AI in media is simple: create chaos and confusion in society and make people doubt the veracity, reliability, and validity of information and valuable sources. The text uncovers the dark side of AI/ML for media and politics, and also deals with possible countermeasures to handle this misuse of promising technologies. Recently, media research dealing with the threats of a darker side has gained the focus of both the research community and politics in certain jurisdictions. On the positive outcome of media innovation, labs are active in different domains, funding research and prototypes to ameliorate media challenges like trust, information pollution, typos, and successful methods in understanding, interpreting, and categorizing different AI and machine learning-related technologies in use. One baseline finding for AI and media research is straightforward: AI content-regulating tools solve some of the problems but can be a threat to protected speech, transparency, and content manipulation by corporations, governments, and any other third-party actors.

摘要
