Canoes in the Landscape
摘要
The dugout canoe’s affordances and constraints shape human relationships with the physical environment, contributing to the formation of Imbotero’s maritime cultural landscape. Different canoe-enabled activities occur within various geographic sub-areas in and around the village, each constituting a distinctive sector of the landscape. Different land uses and landscape relationships are created by and associated with farming, fishing, and several other forms of resource exploitation, while further landscapes are associated with officialdom and the international border, business, children’s play, and places beyond Imbotero where the “outside world” is engaged occasionally but intensively. An intangible landscape of history, toponomy, memory, and myth is barely discernible.
