This chapter summarizes the tissue engineering strategies used to engineer the various cartilage types with the goal of restoring or regenerating them throughout the body. The three fundamental pillars of tissue engineering (i.e., cells, scaffolds, and biochemical/biomechanical cues) and their use are discussed. Various cell sources that have been used in cartilage tissue engineering are introduced, with their translational applications highlighted. Then, scaffold-based and scaffold-free approaches are explored. Finally, biochemical and biomechanical cues that are employed in the different phases of cartilage tissue engineering are presented. Altogether, these sections provide a broad overview of current techniques used in cartilage tissue engineering.

摘要
