The most important subject of this chapter is the intellectual and personal relationship forged by Mann and Karl Kerényi, who helped, almost as a co-author, with the writing of Joseph and His Brothers. Also important was Mann’s meeting with Sándor Márai, a great novelist whose work bore the stamp of his admiration for Mann and reverence for Goethe. The rest of the chapter reflects on Mann’s meetings in Budapest with left-liberals such as the poet Attila József who, with his friends, moved Mann ever closer to socialism.
