Intertransverse Ligaments

An intertransverse ligament (ITL) travels between the transverse processes of adjacent vertebrae, partially mixed with the intertransverse muscles. It is often absent in the cervical spine, is cord-like in the thoracic spine, and is membranous in the lumbar spine. The ITL restricts excessive flexion of the spine to the opposite side and strengthens the intervertebral joints, which can be affected by certain spinal injuries. It connects adjacent transverse processes and is relatively weak. It contributes to stabilizing the spine, especially by limiting lateral flexion. In the anatomy of the spine, the ITLs, together with other ligaments such as supraspinous ligaments, maintain spinal stability.
