The supraspinous ligament (SSL) attaches to the C7 spinous process and each subsequent thoracolumbar spinous process down to L3 or L4 in most humans, providing tension to prevent hyperflexion of the spine. The mesoderm provides the substrate for its development. Pathologies of the SSL can impair spinal stability, generate pain, and impede invasive diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
