The notion of epistemic verisimilitude that I advance in this chapter is, together with epistemic vulnerability, one of the main ideas that I develop in this book. First, I clarify that verisimilitude is a thick, second-order concept that we use both to describe and evaluate other aspects of human culture. Second, I argue that the notion of verisimilitude plays important, albeit different, roles in various areas of human experience. I analyse its application to political discourse, narrative texts, and hypothetical theories in science. Finally, I show that there is a whole set of family resemblances, particularly in relation to the notion of truth, between the verisimilitude that is characteristic of each of these human endeavours and its results. The perspective I adopt is synchronic. I show the structural properties that constitute epistemic verisimilitude. I tackle the synchronic, dynamic aspects of the notion, the most important ones to analyse theory change, and how we should epistemologically evaluate our scientific theories in the second part of the book.
