Moving East South Asian Workers and Environments of Domesticity in Postsocialist Romania
摘要
This essay explores the emergent practices of domesticity among South Asian migrants in Romania, focusing on how their experiences of migration reshape their understanding and practices of home. Against the backdrop of Romania’s historical out-migration to Western Europe, the recent influx of South Asian workers provides a unique lens through which to examine how domesticity is negotiated within a postsocialist context. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in 2024 in the small town of Rm. Vâlcea, the essay traces how migrants, in adapting to new environments, navigate a tension between the domesticities they bring with them and the unfamiliarities of the Romanian landscape. Through interviews and video-recorded footage, it explores the ways in which migration challenges, disrupts, and reconstitutes the meaning of domesticity, offering a deeper insight into the transformative processes reshaping Eastern Europe’s postsocialist realities.
