I clarify Michelson’s arguments about Eisenstein’s and Vertov’s cognitive, scientific conception of cinema and the impact of relativity theory on their work. While there is much evidence to support the former, I suggest that Michelson’s claims about the latter, particularly her contention that Eisenstein and Vertov sought to “articulate” the theory of relativity on film, are not persuasive.

摘要

I clarify Michelson’s arguments about Eisenstein’s and Vertov’s cognitive, scientific conception of cinema and the impact of relativity theory on their work. While there is much evidence to support the former, I suggest that Michelson’s claims about the latter, particularly her contention that Eisenstein and Vertov sought to “articulate” the theory of relativity on film, are not persuasive.
