“A Profound Clarity”: Visions of Humanity in Dune
摘要
This chapter explores visions of humanity and the condition humaine in Frank Herbert’s novel, Dune. The book was the first of what was to become a series and was later adapted for film and television. Set on the fictional planet of Arrakis, or Dune, millennia into the future, Dune and its adaptations share the colonial and ecological themes addressed in the Avatar film series, including a narrative about the interaction of the indigenous population and the invaders. Unlike Avatar, however, and many other science fiction media, the colonizers and colonized are all humans. Given the long period over which the novel and its adaptations were produced – from 1965 to the film adaptations by Denis Villeneuve between 2021–2024 – this chapter traces the changing ways that “others” are viewed.
