In this chapter we outline the connection between complete reducibility and spherical buildings, and the further link between buildings and our geometric invariant theory approach. This sequence of ideas is extremely important in the book: although most of what we do in the rest of the book could be achieved without explicit mention of buildings, the ideas in this section give a framework which brings together the various different points of view in a natural way.
