Taking Responsibility for Consequences in Faith-Based Global Mission Work: Insights from Modern Catholic Missionaries
摘要
While faith-based actors from the United States organize time, supplies, and equipment with the goal of meeting the needs of low-resource communities across the globe, such interventions often come with a range of unintended consequences which can be ineffective, counterproductive, wasteful, and even harmful. This is no small problem, as hundreds of thousands of tons of medical donations flow annually from Catholic health care organizations alone. As people of faith tend to engage in global mission work as an expression of faith, maturing our actions in international settings also means maturing the spirituality that inspires such actions. Drawing on our own tradition, we consider the stories of two somewhat recent Catholic missionary figures—who are not perfect but who embody some laudable and relevant virtues and values. Drawing on the themes of humility, sacrifice, solidarity, and relationship, we suggest that engaging such stories may provide a source of spiritual insight for faith-based stakeholders who seek to reduce detrimental consequences and advance positive impact.
