A number of countries, international bodies and technology companies have recently issued guidance on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). While these efforts are extraordinary in their breadth and appreciation of the complexity of the technology, we find these documents directional and aspirational, which is both necessary and helpful. However, as ethicists working in Catholic health care, we do not find these efforts sufficient for ensuring generative AI (gAI) is adopted and utilized in a way that is consistent with the Catholic moral tradition. What is needed is a casuistic method of analyzing potential use-cases of gAI technologies in the specific context of health care delivery. While drawing on the existing directional and aspirational guidance, this chapter will identify the central values of concern and the risks to the Catholic health care ministry’s Catholic identity as presented by various applications of gAI in health care. Finally, we will describe the methodology, organizational tools and processes we have developed to ensure that our organization is employing gAI in a manner that addresses these issues.

摘要
