By associating a linear operator to a dynamical system, one hopes to leverage the structures of linear maps and their spectral theory to gain insight into the system in question. This point of view has a long history, and has enjoyed a great deal of success. Though not the focus in this monograph—and no systematic treatment will be given—we would like to include a few results to illustrate the usefulness of this line of approach.
