Women’s Rights
摘要
Mauritius has a high rate of sexual and domestic violence. The Global Gender Gap Index places the nation 105th out of 146. Victims of domestic abuse are more likely to be women. There have been more allegations of domestic violence to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare. Men are more likely to be murdered and subjected to other violent crimes, but women are more likely to be sexually abused and exploited. The majority of victims of sexual assault and exploitation were female. In light of the aforementioned context, this chapter emphasises on Mauritius's legal and normative framework regarding women’s rights. To illustrate the significant amount of work that still needs to be done in this area, the current laws and policies are examined, and problem areas are highlighted. The potential for improved protection, promotion, respect, and fulfilment of women’s rights in Mauritius is then examined in relation to the African human rights framework, with particular attention to the instruments pertaining to women’s rights.
