Life is fundamentally a dynamic process, “a verb, not a noun,” manifesting through recursive patterns of bioenergy, bioinformation, and biostructure. Drawing from systems biology, developmental theory, and recent concepts like assembly theory and process ontology, biological time is understood as structured, historic, and present-centered. Life unfolds across nested temporal scales, metabolic, developmental, and evolutionary, each contributing to an organism’s coherence and adaptability. Biological time has algorithmic, cyclical, and simultaneous characteristics, akin to music, with melody, rhythm, and harmony. The “thickness” of the biological present is highlighted as a platform for real-time integration and action. Cancer represents a dysregulation of biological time, a disruption in synchrony, rhythm, and temporal integration of organism’s temporal structures. The desynchronization from organismal clocks and the emergence of autonomous temporal programs are fundamental to malignancy. Temporal disruptions are also evident in heterochronies, circadian clock deregulation, and the loss of coordination between cell cycle and systemic rhythms. Novel cancer therapies might emerge from restoring temporal coherence, targeting biological rhythms, and integrating time-aware strategies. Biological time, thus, is both the medium and message of life, a recursive, creative structure that binds the living world across scales and through cosmic time.
