Introduction to Dental Age Assessment
摘要
This chapter focuses on the topic of Dental Age Estimation (DAE), which is primarily used in forensic age evaluation in the absence of any age record or where the age is purposefully hidden. It describes the fundamental concepts, including chronological, skeletal, and dental age. It highlights the significance of teeth as a biological characteristic of identity due to their development, growth, and resilience to environmental deterioration. This also depicts the extent of DAE in civil and humanitarian assistance works such as investigating asylee cases, criminal cases, and disaster victim identification. Indicated methods of visual, radiological, and biochemical DAE are elaborated upon for different age groups. New advances in 3D imaging like CBCT and micro-CT, and the recently introduced artificial intelligence technologies, are said to improve the objectivity and accuracy of results. This information sets the stage for a detailed discussion in the following chapters.
