Malaysia generates approximately 38,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, with a recycling rate of just 17.5% as of 2023. Addressing the national challenges of inadequate infrastructure, limited public awareness, and high treatment costs, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has initiated multiple innovative research programs focusing on sustainable waste management. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of ongoing research activities at UMT, which emphasize the recycling and upcycling of biomass, plastics, carbon-based materials, marine waste, and industrial by-products. Techniques such as pyrolysis, composite and geopolymer production, and product innovation are explored for transforming waste into valuable resources. Analytical tools such as XRD and Raman spectroscopy support the material characterization. The study highlights UMT’s role in advancing Malaysia’s sustainability goals, particularly SDG 12 and SDG 13.
