Professionals in education have received little attention in English for Specific Purposes studies, except when referring to English for research or academic purposes and the pedagogy of English for Specific Purposes. In response, this chapter directs the focus of English for Specific Purposes towards language teachers. To do so, it explores the potential of English for Social Purposes and Cooperation, a socially and culturally responsive approach to English language learning and teaching. This approach promotes the learning of English through topics of social and cultural relevance. Moreover, the chapter explores the potential of English for Social Purposes and Cooperation for teacher training and presents guidelines that could help its implementation in different contexts and educational stages. Ultimately, the chapter aims to position English for Social Purposes and Cooperation as a valid approach to prepare educators for teaching in twenty-first-century classrooms.
