Losing Home, Occupation, and Language: A Case Study of Afghan Evacuees in Germany After 2021

In response to the Taliban’s takeoverGermany of Afghanistan in 2021, GermanyGermany, alongside several other countries, pledged to welcome Afghan refugees, particularly human rights defenders and their families. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Afghans represent the third-largest refugee group globally, following Syrians and Ukrainians. Of the 5.7 million Afghan refugees worldwide, nearly 400,000 reside in GermanyGermany, approximately one-third of whom are womenWomen. Facilitating safe and responsible migration through policies is one of the key targets of the Sustainable Development GoalsSustainable development goals (SDGs), namely SDG 10.7, which is aimed at reducing global inequalitiesInequality. Focusing on the aftermath of the 2021 evacuation, this study explores the situation of Afghan evacuees and the extent to which German policies and regulations have responded to the needs of the Afghan diaspora.
