This chapter examines the potential of cultural heritage as a catalyst for sustainable development, emphasising the need to recognize both its benefits and challenges within international frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals. By evaluating the British Council’s initiatives, particularly The Cultural Protection Fund and Cultural Heritage for Inclusive Growth, the chapter underscores the importance of locally led, people-centred approaches that foster global connections. It aims to identify contextual conditions and enabling features that can maximize the positive impact of cultural heritage in achieving a variety of sustainable development outcomes. The role of cultural heritage within the wider international sustainable development agenda has remained marginalised and under-utilized partly due to the supporting evidence base. There is a need to reflect on both the negative and positive realistic contributions that cultural heritage can play in the aspirations of the sustainable development agenda. Considering what are the contextual conditions, and what are the enabling features, that can allow cultural heritage-based approaches to be effectively mobilised to support sustainable development and UN Sustainable Development Goals?
