Multi-Club Ownership: Sins and Synergies
摘要
In this chapter, the author explores the rise of Multi-Club Ownership (MCO) models as a financial and operational strategy in professional football. By enabling shared resources, streamlined player development, and creative financial structuring, MCOs offer clubs potential advantages in revenue generation and cost efficiency. The chapter examines how these ownership structures can facilitate consistent cultural frameworks across teams, smooth player progression pathways, and help clubs navigate increasingly complex financial regulations. However, Maguire also highlights critical concerns around sporting integrity, noting that MCOs may compromise the unpredictability and competitive balance fundamental to football’s appeal. The author demonstrates that despite their theoretical benefits, the evidence of MCOs delivering sustainable sporting success remains limited. The chapter concludes that while horizontal integration offers familiar efficiencies, its application in football’s unique competitive environment raises significant challenges about transparency, fairness, and the broader implications for the sport.
