Nowadays there are very few boat crossings to New York but in the summer of 1937 that was the customary means of transport for anyone leaving Europe bound for America. People far preferred steamships, given that a few months earlier, on May 6, the Hindenburg had caught fire and collapsed in New Jersey, killing 35 of the 96 people on board.
