Mata Hari?
摘要
Thus far we have made only one mention—toward the end of Chap. 6 —of the fact that soon after being employed on the radio (July 1933) Sergio was the subject of a few lines written by a confidant of the OVRA, the operational arm of Mussolini’s secret police, headed by Arturo Bocchini. The memo states that Sergio was a respectable person and even, according to some rumors, a member of OVRA—though there are no documents confirming that. (The “informants” usually did not know the names of their colleagues.) More important, however, is to try to understand why OVRA did not dig more deeply into Sergio’s life. Bearing in mind that because of her position in the Ministry and frequent dealings with foreign journalists, it would have been completely normal for her to have been under relatively close supervision.
