The sociotechnical paradigm in information systems (IS) offers a holistic framework to view dynamics between social and technical subsystems. Gender is a consistent part of the social subsystem and has often been the object of research in IS. In combination with gender, the concept of social justice is widely used and sparks discussion. To our knowledge, there is no comprehensive review on the subject of gender and sociotechnical systems (STS). The present review is an analysis of the existing IS literature on STS regarding gender and the concept of social justice in this context. By delving into the intersectionality of gender and STS, we contribute to a broader understanding of gender dimensions in STS within the IS, raising awareness of gender definitions and dimensions, as well as sociotechnical perspectives that can lead to fairer and more responsible future research.
