The severe repercussions of international trade in commodities originating from deforested lands underscore the responsibility of major consumer regions in driving environmental destruction. However, there is still no multilateral instrument to tackle this problem. In an effort to address the issue, the European Union designed the EUDR as a market-based measure to regulate commodities trade on the demand side. This introduction brings further context to the matter, and highlights the core problem that justifies this book: as the EUDR regulates the international flow of commodities, major producing countries—such as Brazil—may be negatively affected by the norm’s implementation. This section also presents both the book’s structure and methodology, comprising an empirical and interdisciplinary study to boost the identification of obstacles, alternative mechanisms and adaptation measures, and to explore potential avenues for discussion to ensure more effective implementation of EU regulations with extraterritorial impact, such as the EUDR.
