History of Radiotherapy: 1895–1905

This chapter reviews radiotherapy from 1895 to 1905, following the discovery of x-rays and radium. It covers the physical properties of these radiation sources, their early clinical applications primarily for skin diseases, and the use of devices like the Crookes tube and radioactive materials such as radium and radon. Key challenges included the rudimentary methods for quantifying radiation (dosimetry) and localizing treatment, which contributed to safety concerns. Consequently, radiotherapy was mainly dermatological due to low-energy x-rays and basic dosage control.
