Understanding Loss & Damage from Climatic Extreme Events in India
摘要
Among the vulnerable nations in South Asia, the nation like India is often experiencing climatic extreme events like cyclonic storms, floods, droughts, torrential rainfall, heatwaves, etc. It is mostly reported that the losses and damages from these events are increasing over the years, and the notion loss and damage also emerged as a major buzzword in the international climate policy negotiation. Given this, this chapter aims to understand loss and damage from climatic extreme events like cyclonic storms, floods, droughts and heatwaves. The major findings are: (i) the death toll from these events is declining over the years, and it may be due to uptake of several autonomous and planned adaptation measures; (ii) an increasing trend is noticed for number of people affected and total losses and damages from these events, while a declining trend in observed when we look these indicators from a relative terms; (iii) the losses and damages from floods is increasing in some states while it plummets in other states.
