Fluid is a neglected topic in general medicine. Such a fundamental topic to treat any conditions in inpatient setting, but never attracted proper attention. Start with defining dehydration and volume depletion based on the fluid compartment (Fig. 6.1). Colloid vs crystalloid discussion is still ongoing, but new insight of glycocalyx layer (Fig. 6.2) will help us understand fluid shift better beyond Starling’s law.
