Daily Engagements with the Wellesley Community Recreation Centre
摘要
The statement in the above epigraph by Manny, a young Ghanaian man I interviewed, reflects a common belief regarding sport’s potential to engage marginalized youth. But what does it mean to ‘reach’ youth living ‘on the margins’ of society through sport? Instrumental interpretations refer to sport as a ‘hook’ (Draper and Coalter 2016; Nichols 2004; Spaaij et al. 2014), while post-modern approaches have highlighted sport’s ‘seductive’ quality (Collison 2016). My research contributes to the existing literature by emphasizing the more agentic aspects of youths’ engagement with the Wellesley CRC, specifically focusing on their ‘place-making’ practices in this facility.
