This chapter outlines the political, economic, and socio-cultural context of my study. By ‘decentring’ sport to begin my analysis, I follow leading sport scholars who have called for more research positioned within the underpinnings of global inequality and the discursive regimes that shape governance practices in specific nations (Darnell 2012; Darnell et al. 2019; Spaaij et al. 2014). I undertake this task by incorporating governmental discourses of inclusion into an analysis of the structural forces of exclusion impacting the lives of immigrant youth in my field site. By demonstrating how identity politics, spatially marked forms of urban segregation, and cultural stigmatization intersect, I shall exhibit the policy space in which sport is increasingly being deployed to affect social change through. This begins by situating my investigation within the current cultural politics surrounding immigration in Canada.

摘要
