The 2023 General Elections in Sierra Leone: Media Performance, Press Freedom, and Social Responsibility
摘要
This chapter critically examines how media freedom and the social responsibility of the media influenced the largely peaceful voting, and how monitoring media performance in reporting these elections revealed how these twin notions manifested. We go with the argument that ‘a free and fair exchange of ideas is crucial not only to the exercising of electoral rights but also to the very idea of democratic citizenship.’ (Shukla, 2018: 1) Drawing largely on documentary analysis, qualitative analyses of some selected media and expert interview contents, this study found that while media institutions played a pivotal role in the electoral processes, there were concerns about some media freedom violations, unprofessional practices, and inadequate resources that undermined their ability to perform their democratic role to the fullest.
