Overview of Radiographic Anatomy of Head, Face, and Neck Structures

Accurate imaging is essential for diagnosing and managing orofacial pain. This chapter reviews normal radiographic anatomy of the head, face, and neck as visualized by periapical and panoramic radiographs, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It outlines key anatomical landmarks, discusses modality-specific strengths and limitations, and emphasizes systematic image interpretation to distinguish normal from pathological findings. Special attention is given to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) assessment, paranasal sinus anatomy, cranial nerve pathways, and cervical structures, highlighting the role of imaging in guiding clinical decision-making.
