Hidden Champions of Zambia
摘要
This study sought to profile the characteristics of hidden champions in emerging economies using SARO Agro Industrial Ltd. as a case in point in Zambia. The company was selected by the attributes of hidden champions defined by Simon (1996). The exploratory design and abduction logic was adopted to understand the study from the perspective of the company’s Managing Director. A semi-structured interview was used to collect the data, and discourse analysis was used to analyze the data. The study established that the key success factors of hidden champions in emerging economies were not significantly different from other economies, as shown in the literature. The study found that the success of hidden champions was influenced by closeness to customers, dynamic ability to cope with the changes in the business environmental conditions, product quality, investment in highly skilled manpower and modern technology, and ability to control the growth of the business to continue influencing business activities. The study also established that hidden champions suffered from the lack of readily available manpower with perfectly required skills and knowledge, and non-supportive regulation in some cases. The study recommends that training institutions should collaborate with the industry to synchronize the knowledge and skills required by the industry and the training of academic institutions. It is also recommended that the government and its regulatory agencies engage the SMEs from time to time to understand the main regulatory challenges inhibiting growth to hidden champions and beyond.
