Hidden Champions of Moldova

This chapter describes the economic, socio-political, and business environments in which Moldova’s potential hidden champions operate. It explores how these companies, originating from a small Eastern European country, manage to expand regionally and globally, building a worldwide customer base. Through interviews with key company figures and analysis of secondary sources, the chapter identifies the developmental needs and success factors of these potential hidden champions. The discussions highlight the continuous efforts in automation, production enhancement, and employee investment, which drive their recognition and strong market positions both locally and globally. The chapter also examines the impact of recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine on these companies, noting some disruptions in the logistical chain, increased costs for raw materials, and anxiety among employees. In response, companies are strategizing to diversify their export markets and enhance customer cooperation. The analysis underscores the dual influence of external and internal factors on company operations, including economic instability and energy crises, and discusses the risk mitigation strategies implemented by the companies. The chapter concludes with recommendations for stakeholders to support the ongoing prosperity of Moldova’s potential hidden champions in the future.
